Featuring four members of hometown heroes Hey Rosetta!, Wunderstrands played a magical set of sombre yet uplifting pop. Led by Mara Pellerin, a singer and horn player in HR!, the eight-piece band couldn't have been more artful in their attack.
With trumpets blaring and drums thundering and crashing, Wunderstrands make really sturdy chamber-pop that churns and bursts in unexpected ways. Pellerin stands calmly in the eye of the storm, a lovely, angelic presence with enough might to hold her own against musical expressions that occasionally recalled Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-era Wilco.
The Rock House was chatty but those who paid attention to the band left a little lighter on their feet because of Wunderstrands.
