Toronto musician Peter Turik made headlines in 2018 when he boldly posted about breaking up his doom metal band Witchrot "due to the unfortunate reality of our guitarist fucking my girlfriend of almost 7 years." Though the band quickly got back together in the wake of their viral fame, Turik is still nursing a broken heart, which has resulted in Songs of Women, Whiskey, and Sin, his debut solo album as Blood Snake Pete.
True to form, second track "Game of Women" opens with Turik declaring, "She broke my heart and it shattered into a million pieces, and I cut my fingers trying to pick them up off the floor." The rest of the album follows in forlorn fashion, with Turik's wistful words set to a tasteful backdrop of folk, country, punk and garage rock, featuring songs with names like "Broken, Possessed, and Stinkin' Like Death," "I've Walked Through the Streets of Hell" and "Fillin' Up This Kiddie Pool of Whiskey," plus a cover of the Cure's "Cold."
In more recent Witchrot news, vocalist Lea Reto covered Mazzy Star for Exclaim!'s Class of T.O. video series and told us that Witchrot's debut album is nearing completion.
