Netflix unleashed its latest binge-worthy original show last week with the arrival of The OA, and it turns out that there are more than a few familiar faces starring in the series.
In addition to the likes of Riz Ahmed (Rogue One star and member of Swet Shop Boys), Phyllis Smith (The Office) and Scott Wilson (The Walking Dead) — not to mention a score courtesy of Rostam Batmanglij, whose brother created and directed The OA — the show also features a 5-episode arc for Sharon Van Etten. The singer-songwriter confirmed her role via Instagram today (December 21).
In addition to showing off her acting chops as a character named Rachel, Van Etten's song "I Wish I Knew" also appears in one of the episodes of The OA.
It's the latest of Van Etten's recent forays onto the screen, following musical contributions to Squidbillies and a Tig Notaro documentary, as well as scoring this year's Strange Weather.
Continuing her TV trajectory, Van Etten is also slated to appear in the upcoming third season of Twin Peaks — though all we've seen from that so far is a clip of David Lynch eating a donut.
As previously reported, The OA tells the story of a young woman returning to her hometown, cured of her blindness after a mysterious seven-year disappearance, but unwilling to talk to her parents or the FBI about what happened while she was gone. You can unpack the mystery for yourself; the entire first season is streaming on Netflix right now.
