Still

Weekend Nachos' latest full-length is entitled Still. Fortunately, and predictably, if you've followed this self-proclaimed "jock powerviolence" band's trajectory, still is last thing you'll be while this is playing. Weekend Nachos haven't drastically altered their style, instead opting to beef it up. The most noticeable difference is the welcome abrading of vocalist John Hoffman's voice, which now more resembles a ferocious wolf than an angry, threatened canine. His vicious barks and growls intermingle with some of the heaviest music this side of contemporaries Coke Bust and Magrudergrind, and even legends like Infest. That's not to imply there isn't anything for those with less abrasive tastes to grasp: the mid-section of "Late Night Walks" is catchy, in an "I want to beat this out of my head" kind of way, while "Watch You Suffer" is a grinding romp through Enabler territory, before dragging you through filth for the second half. These sludge, grind and every-other-extreme-imaginable influences pervade the group's take on hardcore. Like the titular foodstuff, the variety of flavours somehow brings out the best in one another, leading to an altogether more rewarding experience than consuming only the individual components.
