UK post-punk quintet Squid have once again extended the umbrella of their sophomore LP O Monolith, this time with a short film.
Since dropping the project on Warp in June, Squid have made an entire media universe out of it — first with the audiobook Lessons, and now with a visual companion named after the album.
The nearly two-minute film is directed by Stella McCartney collaborator Ivana Bobic and stars Ted Rogers (no, not the Canadian communications oligarch).
Separated into three distinct dialogue-free sections, the film features album cuts "After the Flash" and "If You Had Seen the Bull's Swimming Attempts You Would Have Stayed Away.".
"The piece expresses O Monolith as a whole — the music is so rich in ideas with huge highs and lows and, at the same time, is so abstract," Bobic said [per Fader]. "It needed a different approach from a traditional music video. We wanted it to feel like a journey through the album, so we decided to convey the breadth of emotions and moods rather than specific songs (although you do get glimmers of a sync performance with 'After the Flash')."
