Fresh off the announcement of All Roads Lead Home, his forthcoming new album with members of Crazy Horse, Neil Young's road has led him to Victoria, BC, for his first public performance in over three years.

As reported by CTV News, the legendary singer-songwriter surprised the hundreds of demonstrators that had gathered in Centennial Square on Saturday (February 25) to protest the Canadian government's failure to protect old-growth forests from logging.

After being introduced by his wife, Young performed two songs at the event (dubbed "United We Stand for Old Growth Forests! Declaration, March and Super-Rally"): "Comes a Time" and "Heart of Gold." He addressed the crowd between them, thanking Canada and calling ancient trees "precious" and "sacred."

This marks the COVID-conscious musician's first live set since 2019. A strong proponent of vaccine education, Young has been hesitant to perform amid the ongoing pandemic, saying as recently as last year that he still wasn't ready to return to the stage for the sake of his safety. However, he has also spoken about his plans to make a sustainable return to touring and has been announced as part of the lineup for an autism benefit concert and Willie Nelson's 90th birthday in April.
