Mdou Moctar has one of Exclaim!'s 31 Best Albums of 2021 So Far in Afrique Victime, and the guitarist has now shared a short documentary behind the effort.

The 10-minute doc features Moctar and his band — rhythm guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane, drummer Souleymane Ibrahim and American bassist and producer Mikey Coltun — meeting up in Niamey, Niger, ahead of the album's release.

The reunion marked the first time the band had been together since playing over 200 concerts worldwide in 2019. The film also touches on the geopolitical circumstances, environment and inspirations that informed the record.

You can watch the short film, shot by Coltun, Mamadou Halidou and WH Moustapha, below. Read Exclaim!'s review of Afrique Victime.

Moctar's previous album, Ilana (The Creator), landed among Exclaim!'s 10 Best Soul, Funk and World Albums of 2019.
