Watch John K. Samson's Churchill Travelogue

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 14, 2016

John K. Samson gifted us with his latest solo LP Winter Wheat earlier this year, but he's looking to give back in a different way this holiday season. To help raise awareness and funds for Churchill, MB's Hungry Bears Food Bank, the former Weakerthans frontman travelled to the Manitoba town and played a show back in November. Now, Exclaim! is giving you the first look at footage from Samson's trip, including interviews with the singer-songwriter and a live performance.

Following the closure of the port (one of the town's biggest employers), the remote subarctic community of Churchill is currently facing a spike in unemployment — and with 10 percent of the population now out of work, the local food bank is preparing for a busier than usual winter. Follow Samson and his crew on their journey through the tundra, the town and the old port, as they get to know the land and people (and even some polar bears!) that need some extra support.

Once you've been acquainted, continue watching to check out footage from last month's benefit show in Churchill. You can see Samson and his band perform "Postdoc Blues" from Winter Wheat, as well as Weakerthans classic "Reconstruction Site" in the players below. Just scroll past the singer-songwriter's upcoming tour dates and hit play.

If you want to show your support and make a donation to the Hungry Bears Food Bank, you can do so here.

Samson also just made Exclaim!'s Top 10 Folk & Country Albums of 2016 list with Winter Wheat. You can check out the complete list here.
