Watch Allison Russell Delight NPR's Tiny Desk with Black Girl Banjo Magic

She and her band performed songs from 2021's 'Outside Child'

As select Tiny Desk performances return to the actual NPR office that made Bob Boilen's intimate concert series famous, Allison Russell is the latest musician to grace the historic space with her presence.

"This has been a dream come true," the singer-songwriter professed ahead of ending the performance with her new single "You're Not Alone." Donning a blazer with iridescent shimmer to match her whole energy, Russell also played "Quasheba," "4th Day Prayer" and "Nightflyer" from her acclaimed 2021 debut solo album Outside Child alongside her six-piece band.

"I am grateful and I am proud for this circle of goddesses," the artist said of the three string players, two guitarists and drummer — all women — who joined the multi-instrumentalist auteur; Russell played clarinet and brought Black girl banjo magic in spades.

Joy radiates throughout the transportive set, with a palpable sense of community and deep healing amongst all the players. It's truly a delight to watch.
