Last week, very early footage of John Frusciante emerged, with brief clips showing him shredding at the age of 17 with his pre-Red Hot Chili Peppers band IKE. At that time, bassist Matty "soccermom" Goodman promised to release the full video — and now, as promised, the entire hour-long performance is online.
The whole clip is 54 minutes long, and was recorded at Time Speed studio in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley. It appears to have been filmed on some sort of VHS camcorder, since the footage isn't exactly crystal clear — but it is clear enough to see the very youthful Frusciante absolutely tear into many hard rock, Van Halen-esque shred solos full of two-hand fret tapping.
Frusciante also takes the mic around the 30-minute mark, introducing a song by recounting how the band "almost got our asses kicked" for insulting Jerry Garcia. Even though Frusciante's guitar playing (and appearance) are nearly unrecognizable in this video, his singing voice is unmistakable.
At the 46:35 mark, Frusciante tries his hand at rapping on a song clearly inspired by the Beastie Boys, which is a rare moment when IKE actually sound like the Chili Peppers. Some proto-RHCP influences also emerge at the 16:30 mark, when the band play a funk-punk song called "Sheila" featuring slap bass, wah guitar and Frusciante rapping.
