Volebeats

Mosquito Spiral

BY Sara MontgomeryPublished Jun 1, 2001

Following up last year's all instrumental release Solitude, Detroit's Volebeats have another winner with Mosquito Spiral. Though firmly ensconced in the alt-country scene, this disc is more '80s roots rock than '90s Uncle Tupelo tribute band. Classic country heartbreakers like "I Tried To Tell You" rub shoulders at the bar with sweet pop rockers like "Radio Flyer" and the Beach Boys-influenced "Could You Be The One." This band obviously has more than one songwriter, and manages to alternate vocalists without losing momentum. The Volebeats manage to do something decidedly different from their last disc, placing versatility as high as their talents as songwriters.
