Violent Femmes

'We Can Do Anything' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Feb 26, 2016

Violent Femmes started making music back in 1981, but the folk-punk alt-rockers haven't put out a new full-length studio album since 2000's Freak Magnet. That's about to change, though, with the band declaring We Can Do Anything and dropping an LP of the same name next week.

The new record follows 2015's Record Store Day EP Happy New Year and hears founding member Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie navigating new musical waters in collaboration with their backing band Horns of Dilemma. Longtime member Jeff Hamilton also served as the producer on We Can Do Anything, while Canadian musician (and Barenaked Lady) Kevin Hearn provided his accordion, guitar, keyboard and backing vocal talents to the new material.

The sessions were laid down between Brooklyn and Nashville, and the resulting sounds are just as far-reaching — building on the group's signature blend of folk and punk, and incorporating moments that range from "hard charging stomp" to "intimate melancholy."

Violent Femmes will be embarking on a North American tour later this year, but before you catch them live, get an exclusive early listen to We Can Do Anything in the player below.

We Can Do Anything is officially out on March 4 via Sony.
