SXSW Live 2007

BY Chris WhibbsPublished Sep 21, 2007

A current search on Amazon finds that you can buy this slick and very commercial collection of performances from Austin, TX’s SXSW festival for one-dollar used. At that price, this just might be worth it. Filmed specifically for this DVD release at two well-lit, sparsely populated venues, it includes songs from "edgy” artists like the Bravery, Razorlight, Mando Diao and… Bowling for Soup? Yikes. The performances are mostly bland, though Annuals and Polyphonic Spree acquit themselves quite nicely in such a commercial vacuum. But that’s about it for highlights, as the absolute lowlights include a cheesy Marc Broussard blues number where he actually sings about living near a bayou and the gaggingly horrible "funk” of Kraak & Smaak. Also included are artist interviews done by Andrew W.K., though the only worthwhile part is the look on his face as Lee "Scratch” Perry babbles like the madman he is.
