Acclaimed Canadian roots label Six Shooter (Justin Rutledge, Elliott Brood, the Beauties) was sufficiently impressed by this Minnesota quintet to sign them to a record deal. Bluegrass, folk and roots styles coalesce in their eclectic sound, and reference points would include Elliott Brood and the Avett Brothers. Like that overrated latter outfit, they occasionally subscribe to the annoying "faster is better" credo, as on "Wait So Long," "New Son/Burnt Iron" and "It's A War." Far more appealing are slower, moodier songs like "Separate" and "Gasoline" that showcase the songwriting and vocal talents of leader Dave Simonett. This Palomino moves better at a canter, not a frantic gallop. The group have the bluegrass harmonies down nicely and the level of musicianship is strong. Expect them to do well on the summer festival circuit.
