The 13th edition of Toronto's internationally acclaimed X Avant New Music Festival is set to take place this fall, and organizers from the Music Gallery have revealed that this year's event will feature a special guest curator.
The lineup for the 2018 festival, set to take place October 11 to 14, was curated by Bear Witness of A Tribe Called Red. The DJ/producer made his selection by drawing from themes of the group's 2016 LP We Are the Halluci Nation.
"I am looking at this festival as an opportunity to extend the arms of Halluci Nation to include some of the artists that I feel are already doing work in line with the its values," Bear Witness explained in a statement. "It is a future history given to inform the past. It is a rallying cry to all nations. We need to learn from things almost forgotten. We need to learn what it is to be human again and how to treat others as human."
Acts set play this year's event include cumbia artist El Dusty, abstract turntablist Maria Chavez, Halluci Nation contributors Narcy and Jennifer Kreisberg, Los Poetas, Tasman Richardson, Dre Ngozi, Nino Brown, Above Top Secret, Geronimo Inutiq, Creeasian, Respectfulchild, Lillian Allen, and Ziibiwan. Bear Witness will also collaborate with the invited artists.
Visuals throughout the festival will come from multimedia artist Jax A Muse. All shows will take place at the 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media and Education, save for the October 13 event taking place at the Mod Club.
An early bird festival pass can be had for $40, while tickets for individual evenings are also on sale. Further ticketing information can be found through the Music Gallery's official website.
