On the heels of her debut single "Doubts," Toronto R&B/jazz singer Kyla Charter has announced plans for her debut album, Edible Flowers, which is out sometime in April.
The record — written in the summer of 2020 at a time when Charter "could not focus on anything" amid the chaos — is further previewed with new single "Qwyn," an ode to the vocalist's sister. It arrives alongside its own music video comprised of old family VHS footage found in Charter's grandmother's house.
"My sister Qwyn has been my best friend and co-conspirator since we were fresh out the womb," Charter said of the track in a release. "I started writing this song about 10 years ago when we thought we might lose her. I put the song to bed unfinished until recently when I realized I've been mourning her in a different way."
She continued: "I think the mark of any healthy long-term relationship is the ability to love a person as they grow and change; and my sister and I have definitely done so. I gave myself space to mourn the loss of the comfort and familiarity of our old ways, and in doing so made way for a love and appreciation of the people we are now."
The rest of the album likewise deals in the trades of grief and mourning, and came to fruition with the help of production team Safe Spaceship (Chino De Villa, Scott McCannell and Ben MacDonald).
