The duo of Vancouver-born Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel — a.k.a Tommy Lefroy — have announced their second EP, previewed by latest single "Worst Case Kid."

Rivals is due March 10. It follows 2021's Flight Risk.

"This EP is a lot more confident," the band said in a statement. "It's unapologetic. We were joking that Flight Risk was like the flight and Rivals is the fight. A sense of badness about it! In many ways it's about the relationship we have with each other, how we challenge each other and protect each other."

Named after the original 19th century fuckboy — and real-life inspiration for Mr. Darcy — Thomas Langlois Lefroy, who broke Jane Austen's heart, the duo came together despite 5,000 miles between them. The pair met in Nashville in 2018, then continued crossing paths at parties. It wasn't until Mouzourakis went to see supergroup boygenius at the Commodore Ballroom in her hometown that she thought, "I want this, I can do this." She proceeded to post a cover of their song "Ketchum, ID," to which Bethel responded, "Can we start a band?"

A dark haze of spangled guitars drive new single "Worst Case Kid," which ruminates on mental health struggles and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). "This song personifies dysphoric thoughts as a sort of toxic love interest," the band explained. It's about how catastrophizing despite better judgement is much like returning to someone you know is bad for you. When you go through really intense bouts of depression, you come out of it feeling drenched, and when it's okay again, 'the witch is dead', so to speak. We both struggle with bouts of sadness and the song is about getting through it."
