Tinariwen have lifted the curtain on a new album with contributions from Daniel Lanois. The collective will share Amatssou on May 19 via Wedge.
The follow-up to 2019's Amadjar, the 12-song Amatssou is said to find Tinariwen exploring the middle ground between rural American country music and their trademark desert blues. Lanois contributes instrumentation and additional production alongside guest players Wes Corbett and Fats Kaplin.
Lanois previously remixed Tinariwen's song "Adounia Ti Chidjret" back in 2016 — a project he undertook while in a moving vehicle. On Amatssou, he appears on "Arajghiyine" and "Jayche Atarak."
Amatssou was intended to be tracked at Jack White's private studio in Nashville, who invited the group to the US with Lanois, Corbett, Kaplin and a group of local country musicians. Pandemic-related hurdles ultimately left the collaborators to work remotely: Tinariwen in Djanet, Algeria, Lanois in Los Angeles, Corbett and Kaplin in Nashville and Kabyle percussionist Amar Chaoui in Paris.
"Tenere Den," featuring fiddle from Kaplin, arrives alongside today's announcement, and you can hear it below alongside a video directed by Alexis Jamet.
Having played Canada on tour last fall, Tinariwen have now revealed a run of tour dates in the US and Europe, which you can find via the band's official website. The trek will mark the group's first time stateside since 2019.
