Timeout Drawer

A Difficult Future

BY I. KhiderPublished Nov 1, 2001

An instrumental album done in a post-rock style with the addition of vintage Moog keyboard sounds reminiscent of Moving Pictures and Signals-era Rush. Initially, I was taken aback by the dated Moog sounds but they did grow on me. The Time Out Drawer has a good feel for melody, which is why these tunes still played in my head after the CD was put away. A Difficult Future consists of guitars, drums and a whole whack of synths. Every song is instrumental, with the synth sounds being rich and varied enough to replace vocals, giving something of a faceless quality to the music, yet the playing is solid enough to keep this from being a bad thing. This album, which comes with gorgeous packaging with poetic prose, will surely grow on you.
