"Ropes" (video)

Swedish-Canadian husband and wife duo Thus Owls released their Turning Rocks LP earlier this year (via Secret City) and are about to take it overseas for a string of European shows. Before they leave, though, the band has unveiled a brand new clip for album cut "Ropes" and Exclaim.ca has got the exclusive premiere for you to see.

The folksy couple of Erika and Simon Angell deliver some gorgeous visuals to pair with the dreamy, rhythmic tune. Exploring the beauty of nature with the added pizzazz of psychedelic effects, the video is certainly a colourful affair.

Director Mylene Simard summed up the experience of working with the band to create the video in the following statement:

Over diner many months ago, Simon, Erika and I discussed telling a story through the song "Ropes" that was fantastical and murky, about creatures or monsters forced to separate in some sort of magical forest, set off on their own path, reluctantly and painfully. We wanted to make a beautiful fairy tale video, with mixed-in with elements of horror and psychedelia.

The final result is so interesting and suggestive, strange and dream-like, that I hope viewers come out of watching it with their own interpretation or feeling about it. It was important for us to create something nebulous and weird to counteract the earnest and straight-forward lyrics, and let the wonderful interplay between "Ropes"' striking, heart-breaking ballad parts and its explosive guitar and organ solos inform and inspire the visuals.
