Thievery Corporation/Various

Versions

Published Jul 1, 2006

Fans (and coffee shops who already have Thievery Corp. on constant rotation) will not be disappointed by the release of Versions, a new collection of remixes by the Washington duo. Not surprising, most tracks get the signature TC treatment: dubbed out, deep, rolling bass lines, with the addition of bongos and a dash of curry. Considering that the duo are working with similar sounding artists it’s not really a true test to their remixing skills. That said, they occasionally wander from the familiar taking on the Doors, Ben Fold’s side project Fear of Love and Sarah McLachlan. TC roll Morrison a fat blunt on "Strange Days,” tripping out an already trippy song and fans of the voice not the music will enjoy Sarah McLachlan’s "Dirty Little Secret,” which TC successfully strip down till there’s nothing left but the mournful trails of her vocals. In the realm of "this sounds like us,” Bebel Gilberto’s sexy "Cada Beijo” is softened slightly, moving a fiery dance floor number into the bedroom, and Wax Poetic’s "Angels,” featuring Norah Jones, gets some nice dub treatment — more than enough to make me forget Jones is singing. "Originality,” featuring famed Jamaican improviser/DJ Sister Nancy, is the only new Thievery track, which, with its chilled horns and reggae moves, is classic TC — but as a single pales compared with Cosmic Games’ recent hits "Warning Shots” or "Marching the Hate Machines Into the Sun.”
