Jonny Pierce's the Drums project has announced plans for the follow-up to 2017's Abysmal Thoughts. A new album called Brutalism will arrive on April 5 via Anti-.
It marks the fifth studio album under the moniker of the Drums, though the project has been operating as a solo project for Pierce since the last LP.
He revealed in a press release that it's a record largely about self-care. After going through a divorce and living alone in Los Angeles for a period, Pierce said he started trying to combat his depression by "going to therapy, eating well, exercising at the gym, taking a step back from partying, and focusing on positive relationships while weeding out the not-so-good ones."
Despite implementing all those methods of self-care, Pierce still found himself struggling — and turned those feelings into the album's lead single "Body Chemistry."
"I still found myself weighed down with anxiety and depression," he said. "This song asks the question: Is this dull, sad feeling in my DNA? Is it part of my gene pool? Can it ever be corrected? I had been confronting some of my most stubborn demons, and I came to realize that confronting doesn't always mean conquering."
The album was recorded between Upstate New York and Stinson Beach, and co-produced by Pierce. Chris Coady was then brought in to mix it.
