The big story out of this year's Newport Folk Festival was the unexpected live return of Joni Mitchell, but the fest had some other surprises up its sleeve too — Sylvan Esso took it as an opportunity to play their new album in its entirety.

That new album is called No Rules Sandy, and it's arriving August 12 on Loma Vista. In a statement about the record, Sylvan Esso's Amelia Meath said: "it feels like who we actually are. It just feels like us. We're not trying to fit into the mould, just happily being our freak selves."

Her bandmate Nick Sanborn added, "I think that the ultimate effect of our last record and the pandemic has been the feeling of like, 'Fuck that, I know what I want.' And it's now or never. So let's get out there and do it."

Alongside the album announcement, the duo has also shared a new song called "Didn't Care," which follows previously released singles "Sunburn" and "Your Reality," all of which will appear on No Rules Sandy

Sylvan Esso's last record was 2020's Free Love
