Sufjan Stevens

"Carrie & Lowell"

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 17, 2015

Ambitious folk experimenter Sufjan Stevens is paying tribute to his mother and stepfather with the new album Carrie & Lowell, and having already shared a couple of tunes from the album, he has now unveiled the title track.

As with the rest of the cuts we've heard from the album, "Carrie & Lowell" is an intimate acoustic ballad with a melancholic tone and personal lyrics. There are some deft arpeggios, layered vocals, and synthesized ambient textures that come to the forefront at the end of the track. It's a much simpler sound than we've grown accustomed to hearing from the songwriter in recent years.

The song appeared on Mary Anne Hobbs' BBC Radio 6 show. Skip ahead to the 33-minute mark to get straight the pertinent song.

Carrie & Lowell arrives on March 31 through Asthmatic Kitty Records.
