The Stranglers

It's debatable whether any band can actually still be relevant almost 40 years into their career, but the Stranglers don't do anything to embarrass themselves on 17th studio album Giants. Released in the UK back in 2012, Giants does possess some moments hinting at former glories, such as on "Freedom is Insane," which takes its time to build into something rather wonderful. Elsewhere, the mood is a bit mellower and there's a distinct lack of immediacy in the music. Clearly, the era they're aiming to emulate is the mid-'80s and, sonically, they've nailed it (particularly with the keyboards), but the songwriting is a bit more hit-and-miss, like they're simply following a long-tested template. There's no doubt they've made much better albums in the past, but considering the average age of the members is over 60 and they're still playing live, much can be forgiven. It isn't hard to guess which songs from their vast discography fans will be yelling for at their concerts though.
