STATS

Mercy

STATS' follow-up to their first two EPs, Crowned and Marooned, is full-length Mercy, a math-y, proggy, post-hardcore offering that, unfortunately, sounds a bit dated.

There are a few standout songs here, like "List Serve," which gets groovy and spacey, and in terms of pure skill and shredding abilities, STATS definitely have the chops; there's some impressive riffing on the album, and a few really introspective moments that incorporate groove and catchy hooks into the mix. But in 2015, this doesn't quite cut it — the math-rock sound is decidedly turn-of-the-century.

Overall, if you are looking for something fresh and technical, you might be better off checking out some more relevant, boundary-pushing bands, like the Contortionist or Animals as Leaders.
