Squirrel Flower Announces New Album 'Tomorrow's Fire,' Shares Double Single

She'll perform her new music live in Toronto this October

BY Megan LaPierrePublished Jul 18, 2023

Squirrel Flower — the spindly indie rock project of Chicago's Ella Williams — has announced her next studio album, led by the singles "Full Time Job" and "When a Plant Is Dying."

Tomorrow's Fire is due October 13 on Polyvinyl. It follows 2021's Planet (i), as well as 2020's I Was Born Swimming. According to press notes, while some of Squirrel Flower's previous work may have erred more folk, the new album is firmly a rock record.

Drawing its name from the title of a novel Williams's great-great-grandfather wrote, Tomorrow's Fire was recorded in Asheville, NC, with a studio band the singer-songwriter and engineer Alex Farrar assembled, featuring Jake Lenderman (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), Dave Hartley (the War on Drugs) and Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen).

"The songs I write are not always autobiographical, but they're always true," Williams said in a statement, citing Jason Molina, Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen as inspirations for the album.

The double-single release offers a glimpse into two different sides of the artist and the through-line of the desperation of making a living as a musician. Williams will bring her new tracks on tour in North America this fall and early next year, with a lone Canadian stop at Toronto's Monarch Tavern scheduled for October 21.
