Vancouver's Skinny Kids have that jangly Southern-fried psych-rock sound down pat, and the style to match. With bassist Scott Pastolo in an oversized straw cowboy hat and singer/guitarist Trevor Gray in a brown jacket and blue jeans, both boasting shoulder-length hair, they looked like they just wandered out of the desert, the lingering waves of an acid trip rolling back behind their eyelids. Gray embodied the role of the mystical minstrel shaman, his voice drenched in reverb and his surf guitar tone distorted to a lo-fi and warbled texture. Locking down the rhythm section, Pastolo showed flair as he worked his way up the frets, while Nick Creamore propelled a tribal swing on the drums. They need a little more variety in their sound and songwriting if they're to take it to the next level, but they've only released one self-titled EP so far, so they have a lot of wandering time ahead of them. It will be something to see where they end up, but it looks to be somewhere between Ty Segall and the Growlers.
