Hand Picked Fragments

BY Eric HillPublished May 1, 2002

The debut effort by the newest robot on Suction Records, Hand Picked Fragments is just that: pieces of raw musical ideas via a synthesis of electro-styles. This album is nowhere near as energetic, pop melodic or refined as Suctions' founders, rather one might call Skanfrom "Solvent and Lowfish light." Hand Picked... is not without its charm, however; it is very cute and quirky, in a lonely electronic bedroom producer kind of way. Songs like "Frozen Milk," "Cashier" and "Sleeping Cat" convey a preoccupation with the mundane events in everyday life. Robot vocals, like on "Confused Machines," spill through the album like cryptic free verse utterances to musical jingles. A nice, sweet electronic music sketchbook.
