The Stereo Dynamite Sessions Vol. 1

It's great to see Toronto's Simone Denny back on the music scene with a new project. With a career punctuated by award-winning highlights — including her part in DJ Chris Sheppard's dance group Love Inc. that rode the crest of a dance/house/electronic/pop sound in the late '90s — Denny's matchless "fill the freaking room" vocals and range mean that The Stereo Dynamite Sessions Vol. 1 automatically requires material befitting such a powerful voice.

The album had been delayed a few times, but for the most part, it delivers with a selection of original compositions and cover joints. "Your Love Fades Away" smolders, as does "This Ain't Our Time." There are a few tracks that don't effectively challenge the talented vocalist — "She Don't Care About You" and "Just Like Lightning" spring to mind — but the project's overall easy listening vibe goes down nicely. Tracks like the playful "Tease Me" and her breathy, slowed-down take on ABC's "The Look Of Love" are worth the price of admission alone.

It's great to hear Denny in this capacity once more; The Stereo Dynamite Sessions Vol. 1 carries a sensuous, smoky flair.
