Beyond his back catalogue, Shad's way with words has led him to hosting gigs on radio and television. Now he's set to take the stage as part of a new production with Vancouver's Electric Company Theatre.
Shad will make his theatrical debut as part of Carmen Aguirre's Anywhere But Here, a "psycho-social-spiritual-physical journey" set in 1979 on the desert border between the United States and Mexico.
A press release notes that a series of "rap pieces" Shad co-wrote with Aguirre will be incorporated, adding, "The music of Anywhere But Here is a significant and heavily featured element in the play, carrying the story across several historic events to the present day."
Anywhere But Here follows a father and two daughters driving from Canada to Chile to refute their refugee status.
As Aguirre explained in a statement, "We are in the midst of the biggest refugee crisis the world has faced, with millions of people living in a state of displacement and exile. Behind the statistics and news media are real stories of individual and collective resilience that need to be shared."
The world premiere of Anywhere But Here will see the production run February 4 through 15 at the Vancouver Playhouse. Further ticketing and performance information can be found through Electric Company Theatre's official website.
