Set Your Goals

Mutiny

Published Sep 1, 2006

Even if hard-pressed, one could count the number of positively-driven punk and/or hardcore bands on one hand. And even then you’re stretching it once you get past Gorilla Biscuits, 7 Seconds and Lifetime (who don’t count by default of their currently criminally charged bassist). This is why when a band such as Set Your Goals come along, one almost wants to embrace them, pinching their fleshy little cheeks like a desperate grandmother. Hell, they’re not even all that great as they confuse the term "hardcore” to mean Travis Barker-esque hyper galloping drums with Glasseater vocals interspersed for good measure. Overall, the majority of Mutiny has closer ties to the late ’90s Fat Wreck SoCal pop punk bands of the world than say, the early Victory hardcore ones. Still, on tracks such as "This Song Is Definitely NOT About A Girl,” the tongue-in-cheek humour and CIV-styled technique are undoubtedly hardcore. Factor in some fucking kick-ass breakdowns and chant-a-longs and you can almost ignore the fact that these guys probably still call their mothers to say goodnight even on tour.
