The Sea and Cake have got by the last two decades by being one of the gentlest indie outfits around, but the generally jazz-and-electronic-inspired outfit get juiced for "On and On," the second song to drop prior to the release of the troupe's upcoming LP, Runner.
The album opener doesn't toss the band into fuzzed-out alt-rock terrain, per se, but Archer Prewitt and Sam Prekop dial up the distortion and further slather their six-string sounds with wobbly shades of shoegaze. You can also credit the extra energy to drummer John McEntire's manic backbeat. Prekop's vocals, meanwhile, are as hushed and dreamy as ever. We wouldn't have it any other way.
As previously reported, Runner sees release through Thrill Jockey September 18. Shortly afterwards, the band head out on a North American tour that will bring them to Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. You can check those dates here.
