Senor Coconut

Around the World

BY Sergio ElmirPublished Jan 19, 2009

What can one say about German producer/DJ Uwe Schmidt's alter ego (Señor Coconut) that hasn't already been said? After relocating to Chile in search of some musical inspiration, Schmidt became Señor Coconut and famously remixed Kraftwerk with a mambo twist. Now, several albums later, and with a new label, Coconut is back and this time he's adding his unique electro-mambo touch to some of pop's most famous tunes by artists like Daft Punk, Eurythmics and Prince. To say these versions are priceless doesn't even begin to do them justice. Picture a heavy orchestra - brass, double bass, and xylophones - add a sprinkle of synths and drum machines, and some of the cheekiest vocals, and now you're in Coconut land. Somewhere between cheesy and brilliant, Around the World is a party just waiting to happen that endears itself to you from the first tap of the xylophone. Señor Coconut is one of Latin music's most entertaining and unique producers, one who takes the idea of genre-breaking to a whole new level.
