Scott Kelly is the singer/guitarist of seminal metal band Neurosis. He just released his first solo album, Sprit Bound Flesh, on the band's Neurot Recordings label.

Current fixations:

Traditional country music, The Lord of the Rings, all books by Cormac McCarthy

Mind-altering work of art:

Blood Meridian, a book by Cormac McCarthy, Jimi Hendrix's Axis Bold As Love.

Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?

Black Flag, San Diego 1982. It was the first time I saw a band destroy a whole room.

What has been your career high and low?

High: Creating and pulling off our festival, "Beyond the Pale" last year.

Low: Being ripped off by a record label that we trusted.

What should everyone shut up about?

Politicians.

I would drop everything to play a benefit for:

Any organisation that protects children from predators, and helps them to feel safe again.

What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?

My will and my temper.

What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?

Lack of effort, and yes I have, both.

When I think of Canada I think:

Hockey, Voivod, Rush, John Belushi.

What is your vital daily ritual?

Music.

How do you spoil yourself?

I sleep in every couple of months.

What was your most memorable day job?

Janitor in a plastics factory at 14.

If I wasn't playing music I would be:

Writing.

What is your greatest fear?

The state penitentiary.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Light Speed.

What makes you want to take it off and get it on?

Blood and fire.

Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?

No difference except that I'm heterosexual, and bi-musical.

Strangest brush with celebrity:

I had lunch with Ozzy.

Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?

I'd eat a steak with Ernest Hemingway.

What does your mom wish you were doing instead?

I have no idea.
