Mac DeMarco

'Salad Days' (album stream)

BY Matthew RitchiePublished Mar 24, 2014

Jovial sleaze-pop solo artist Mac DeMarco may only be 23 years old, but over time he's slowly become one of the defining voices of his generation, thanks to his 2012 debut Rock and Roll Nightclub and its subsequent follow-up, 2. Now, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter is ready to take a look even further into rock'n'roll's nostalgia-riddled past. Salad Days arrives April 1 through Brooklyn tastemakers Captured Tracks, but you can stream the 11-track LP in its entirety right now on Exclaim.ca.

Recorded at Jizz Jazz studio (don't get too excited — that's just the codename for his windowless bedroom), Salad Days finds DeMarco returning to the AM warble and warped guitars that made his previous records such a success, while delving into deeper sonic and lyrical territories with vintage keyboards ("Passing Out Pieces," "Chamber of Reflection"), calypso love ballads ("Let My Baby Stay") and songs about youthful insecurities ("Blue Boy").

If you're in Canada, hear for yourself by listening to the album in the player at the bottom of the page, and don't forget to check out our April cover story on DeMarco, which you can find at all the usual outlets across Canada this month, as well as online here.
