St. Catharines will honour late Rush drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart with the naming of a pavilion in Port Dalhousie's Lakeside Park.
As the St. Catharines Standard reports, city council officially named the structure Neil Peart Pavilion yesterday (June 3) in a unanimous vote. The pavilion, constructed in 2017 to replace an older structure, had no prior name.
The decision by the Ontario city follows public voting conducted online earlier this year, in which over 81 percent of residents chose Neil Peart Pavilion over the name Lakeside Park Pavilion.
Peart grew up in St. Catharines and held a job working at former midway at Port Dalhousie's Lakeside Park in the summers. The icon captured the waterfront community in writing "Lakeside Park," which appears on Rush's 1975 studio LP Caress of Steel.
"The public voting on naming is obviously fairly conclusive," Port Dalhousie Coun. Bruce Williamson told the Standard. "Neil Peart's been one of our most famous local individuals and a lot of his songs have local roots, including the namesake park."
Peart passed away in January following a battle with brain cancer. He was 67.
A tribute concert that was due to take place in St. Catharines last month has now been pushed to October due to COVID-19.
