Rush's Geddy Lee Gets Film Rights to Dave Bidini's Baseballissimo

When not busy recording their new album, the dudes from Rush are never ones to sit idly. In the case of frontman Geddy Lee, his most recent extracurricular activity involves stepping into the world of film, as he plans to produce a movie based on Baseballissimo: My Summer in the Italian Minor Leagues, the book penned by ex-Rheostatics frontman Dave Bidini.

Lee has optioned the movie and television rights to the 2005 book, reports CBC. The book is about Bidini's trip to Nettuno, Italy, which has been that country's baseball capital since American GIs brought the sport there in the 1940s.

"Ged was one of the first people to really get behind the book, which was a thrill for me, obviously," CBC reports Bidini as saying. "It's early days yet, but I think he's a natural producer. And really, once you've helped run one of the greatest and most respected rock and roll bands of all time, the film biz has got nothing on you, I figure."

It's not the first time Bidini and Lee have crossed paths recently - Bidini gave the induction speech when Rush made it into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in March of this year.

Bidini, who currently plays in Bidiniband, will be releasing his ninth (yes, ninth) book, Search of Dreams at the Homeless World Cup of Soccer, in September. Check out more about his writing here and more about Baseballissimo in particular here.
