Rotten Sound

Cursed

BY Mike SimpsonPublished Mar 15, 2011

Summoning forth a devastating guitar sound, supported by a massive bottom end, Rotten Sound's Cursed showcases a band that have refined the grind to such an extent that whether a particular song's influence is modern or from yesteryear is irrelevant. Perhaps as a cue to the degenerating parade of exclusively one-word song titles it features, the album has an immediacy that goes above and beyond even typical grindcore brevity. Dispensing with samples, these Finns instead hit where it counts, with a completely relentless display of force from start to finish. The amount of variation the group exhibit throughout the onslaught is impressive, from latter-day Napalm Death brutality to simpler d-beat to hyperactive blast beats. The band also demonstrate a deep respect for the groove, whether Nasum-inspired (the latter part of "Alone") or harkening back to North American influences (the intro to "Scared"). Fast or slow, Rotten Sound's intensity is unparalleled.
