Rory Gallagher

Live At Montreux: The Definitive Montreux Collection

BY Sean PalmerstonPublished Oct 1, 2006

The greatest Gaelic guitar god ever unleashes this impressive double disc collection of his numerous performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Gallagher and band made five appearances between 1975 and 1994, most of which are captured in their entirety. As very little footage of Gallagher’s ’70s heyday has been officially released outside of the Irish Tour film (where much of the live footage doesn’t synch properly with the music), the earliest performances made available here, from 1975 and 1977, are like manna from heaven. Seeing his original touring band ripping up early tracks like "Tattoo’d Lady” and "Laundromat” is well worth the price but surprisingly, all of the performances contained within are well done. The 1994 appearance, filmed shortly before his premature death, proves a fitting tribute to one of Ireland’s finest rock musicians ever. (Eagle Rock/EMI)
