Smash/Grab

BY Tyler MunroPublished Jul 12, 2011

At times, the songs on Smash/Grab veer dangerously close to Jet territory, but escaping that, it's a surprisingly raucous EP from a band renowned for their live show, but recently hampered by heavy-handed production. Glossy this is not; it's eight minutes of surprisingly varied punk rock (emphasis on the rock) that walks a garage rock tightrope. "Anything But You" opens Smash/Grab with an almost Lemmy-like bass guitar lead-in and the band don't let up until they close with borderline dance-rock "Parasite Friend," which if anything, is what the Strokes would sound like if they had half the attitude they pretend to.
