RHCP's Chad Smith Plays Drums on His Daughter's New Single, Also Featuring Josh Klinghoffer

Ava Maybee's "Puke" reunites the former bandmates

Like father, like daughter. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith's daughter Ava Maybee is also a musician, and last year competed on American Idol (finishing in the top 14). Now, Maybee has released a new single — and it features both Smith and his former RHCP bandmate Josh Klinghoffer.

The song is called "Puke," and it's a very modern-sounding pop-rock tune inspired by nausea-inducing anxiety attacks. "I knew the song needed live drums, and luckily, I personally know a 'pretty good drummer' who I thought might want to play on the track," Maybee joked in a press release. The same day that Smith tracked his drums, he happened to be finishing off a session with Klinghoffer, who volunteered to play guitar on the spot.

This is the first time Maybee has worked on music with her dad. She's released a number of singles over the past couple years, and in 2021 shared a cover of RHCP's "Universally Speaking."

"Puke" was co-written with Gigi Grombacher and Ori Dulitzki, and produced by Adam Novodor. Hear it below.

Klinghoffer was fired from the Chili Peppers in 2019, but he has continued to work with Smith on various projects. They both play on Morrissey's (as-yet unreleased) album Bonfire of Teenagers, and they backed Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder during his solo concerts.
