This week, some of Taylor Hawkins's friends spoke out about the stress the late drummer was under due to Foo Fighters' busy touring schedule. Now, those same friends are distancing themselves from the report by Rolling Stone and apologizing for their involvement.
One of the friends quoted extensively in the article was Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, who discussed the ways in which Hawkins was overworked and planning to step back Foo Fighters' touring grind. Smith posted on Instagram, saying that he thought the piece was going to be a "loving tribute," rather than the "sensationalized and misleading" one that was ultimately published.
"I apologize to his family and music friends for any pain this may have caused. I miss Taylor every day," he wrote.
This mirrors the reaction by Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, who said that his comments were "taken out of context." He wrote on Instagram, "I am truly sorry to have taken part in this interview and I apologize that my participation may have caused harm to those for whom I have only the deepest respect and admiration."
According to Rolling Stone, Hawkins' friends said that the drummer told friends he had a "heart-to-heart" with Foos leader Dave Grohl about having a less strenuous tour schedule, but that the band continued to add more shows. The band told the magazine such conversations never took place.
