R. Kelly Sentenced to Additional Year in Prison for Child Pornography

The convicted sex offender will serve another one-year sentence following his 30-year prison term

Last summer, disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in New York for the sex trafficking and racketeering charges of which he was found guilty in September 2021. Now, an Illinois federal judge has added a one-year sentence over child pornography charges for the convicted sex offender to serve thereafter.

A jury found the artist born Robert Sylvester Kelly guilty of additional charges of child pornography with three victims, including his then-14-year-old godchild "Jane," in Illinois last September after being shown footage of alleged statutory rape.

That jury found him innocent of seven other charges, including obstruction of justice and enticement into sex crimes. Some of the charges were related to Kelly's infamous 2008 child pornography trial in Chicago, which found the disgraced musician acquitted ("Jane" and her family had refused to cooperate).

Last week, federal prosecutors asked US District Judge Harry Leinenweber to sentence Kelly to an additional 25 years in prison. They argued the musician was "sadistic" and "a serial sexual predator" who "poses a serious danger to society," as per NBC News.

Kelly's attorney Jennifer Bonjean — who successfully had Bill Cosby's sexual assault conviction overturned in 2021 — requested a sentence of approximately 10 years to be served alongside her client's 30-year New York sentence.

At present, 56-year-old Kelly is expected to serve his sentence until his late 80s. CBS Chicago reports that Leinenweber sentenced the sex offender to 240 total months in prison, but 228 of those months are concurrent with last year's federal sentence — so Kelly will only serve one more year on the Illinois child pornography charges.

The disgraced musician is still facing trial in Hennepin County, MN, after being charged with two counts of solicitation and prostitution involving a girl under 18 in 2019 for an alleged incident that dates back to 2001.
