Toronto punk rock mainstays PUP have returned with plans for their fourth studio album THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, which is due to arrive on April 1 via Little Dipper/Universal Music Canada.
The record finds PUP teaming up with Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties), Kathryn McCauhey (NOBRO), Mel St. Pierre (Casper Skulls) and Erik Paulson (Remo Drive), as well as producer Peter Katis, whose bat-infested Connecticut home served as ground zero for the album's five-week recording session.
"It's hands down my favourite PUP record, and I don't think it could've been made under any other circumstances," bandleader Stefan Babcock said in a statement.
"As the weeks passed, we seemed less and less rational, objective, and sane," he added of the recording process. "You can hear the band start to fall off the cliff, and because of that, I think this record is our truest and most genuine to date. There is nothing more PUP than a slow and inevitable descent into self-destruction."
Today, the group have shared the album's previously teased lead single "Robot Writes a Love Song" alongside a Whitey McConnaughy-directed music video, which you can watch below. The album will also include 2021's "Waiting," as well as "Grim Reaping," which Babcock describes as "the idea that we are all reaping what we sow, and right now we're sowing some pretty fucked up shit."
He added: "It's a lot of me trying to articulate my own coping with existential dread, hopelessness, and what I've called 'Grim Reaping.'"
THE UNRAVELING marks PUP's first full-length release since 2019's Morbid Stuff. In 2020, they delivered Juno-nominated EP This Place Sucks Ass.
Assuming Omicron doesn't ruin their tour plans, PUP are due to head out on a massive North American trek in February. See those dates here.
