PJ Harvey is back! Well, nearly — the English icon has taken to social media to announce "A Child's Question, August," a new single that's arriving this Wednesday (April 26).
Alongside the announcement, Peej has shared a brief clip of the song's Steve Gullick-directed video, which features Harvey in a white dress strumming her guitar. You can hear 15 seconds of the new single in that clip, and it features sombre, reverb-heavy electric strums over a rolling drumbeat.
If the snippet is anything to go by — plus the studio-shot teasers that Harvey's been posting on Instagram — "A Child's Question, August" sounds like it might bridge the gap between the gothic folk of 2007's White Chalk and the patchwork rock of Harvey's most recent records Let England Shake and The Hope Six Demolition Project.
Regardless, any new music from Harvey is reason to celebrate, so get excited. The Hope Six Demolition Project came out in 2016, but Harvey's been busy since then — in 2020, Harvey began reissuing her entire catalogue, and last year she announced PJ Harvey: B-Sides, Demos and Rarities. She also released Orlam, a novel-in-verse written in the Dorset vernacular and provided the music for acclaimed Irish comedy Bad Sisters alongside composer Tim Phillips.
Last year, Harvey announced that her 10th studio album would be arriving this summer, so chances are we'll be hearing much more from her soon.
