Pink Floyd Reissue 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' in 360 Reality Audio

The exhumation will feature newly recorded, previously unreleased instrumentation

Legendary rock band Pink Floyd have announced a stand-alone reissue of their 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason - Remixed & Updated. Vinyl, CD, Blu-ray and digital formats of the rework in 360 Reality Audio will be available October 29 via Sony.

The LP was previously remixed in 2019 exclusively as part of the band's massive "Later Years" box set. In revisiting the album, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin sought to reimagine it for the present day — but not without looking back: they incorporated original keyboard parts from Pink Floyd's late keyboardist Richard Wright in the new mix, as well as new drum performances by Nick Mason.

Gilmour said in a statement:

Some years after we had recorded the album, we came to the conclusion that we should update it to make it more timeless, featuring more of the traditional instruments that we liked and that we were more used to playing. This was something we thought it would benefit from. We also looked for and found some previously unused keyboard parts of Rick [Wright's] which helped us to come up with a new vibe, a new feeling for the album

Mason added: "Initially it seemed a bit odd to start reassembling a record after 35 odd years, but the public's appetite for alternate views of the same work has undoubtedly increased immeasurably over time. Inevitably the opportunity to revisit earlier work from a period where digital technology was the brave new world became increasingly interesting."

And here we are with that brave new world of digital technology! What is 360 Reality Audio, you may ask? According to Sony's website, it allows you to "immerse yourself in sound all around you — as real as if you are there at a live concert or with the artist recording in a studio."

The company suggests its "object-based 360 Spatial Sound technologies" are able to create a next-level experience for listening with headphones by "closely mimic[ing] the omni-directional soundscape of live music performance." Huge if true, right?
