After unleashing All Fiction on us earlier this year, Pile have returned with plans for a supplementary EP of songs recorded during the same time period. Hot Air Balloon arrives January 5 via Exploding in Sound, and the band is previewing the collection today with a brand new song.

Sort-of title track, "The Birds Attacked My Hot Air Balloon," arrives today alongside a music video animated by Nicole Amidon, and directed by Nicole Rifkin and Ryan Dight.

"It started off as just an image that felt related to the music (floating peacefully through the air)," bandleader Rick Maguire said of the track in a statement, "but it naturally turned into a story of that peace being interrupted by fear and navel-gazing. I usually use songwriting as a way to look for and work through whatever might need to process, and that's how this one shook out."

Check out Pile's new tune below, where you'll also find the five-song record's tracklist.
