Phil Elverum has been gradually trickling out new music from Mount Eerie, including contributing to a compilation and debuting a performance on the radio. Now, he has offered an album update, confirming that the new project is almost done.
In a post on his Substack newsletter on Sunday (April 7), Elverum wrote that he has been waking up extremely early and going on pre-dawn hikes wearing a headlamp.
"I've been in 'writing mode' for a couple years now, writing songs/poems/words/things I don't even know what," he wrote. "Ideas in words. Lots of songs I'm really proud of have come from this, and they weirdly keep coming, so I keep doing what I'm doing. These last early dark walks have brought forth a big blob of words that I'm hoping will be the last piece of this new Mount Eerie album I've been working on for a long while now. I'm excited to eventually tell everyone all about it. I feel like I've been saying 'I've been writing, I've been recording' for a long time now. But I have. It grows."
The last piece! Sounds promising!
Elverum's most recent Mount Eerie album was 2019's Lost Wisdom pt. 2, a collaboration with Julie Doiron. He brought back his old project the Microphones for the following year's Microphones in 2020. That was his most recent full-length.
Recently, Elverum said he was done writing autobiographically.
