Sheila Peel, his widow, accepted the special prize on his behalf on April 30. The award was voted on by broadcasters and marked the 25th anniversary of the Sony Awards.
Peel was a renowned broadcaster and tastemaker for over 40 years, one whose keen ear helped launch the careers of artists such as the Fall, Blur and the Undertones. He was also bestowed the Lifelong Service to Music Award at the 2005 Shockwaves NME awards.
